6 Ways to Add Fitness Fun to Family Life

Make it a family affair when it comes to fitness. Commit — then start finding the fun in life!

Getting fit as a family is a challenge for many! It means taking matters into your own hands and doing things differently than you have before … it may mean getting OUT of your comfort zone. That’s OK. You can do it! Remember, being healthy as a family is about leading the way for your kids and participating with them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that kids get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity on all or most days of the week … so make fitness a family affair. Here are 6 fun ways to get fit with kids:

1) Be active at the playground with little ones.
Don’t be the parent who sits and watches only. Swing with your child! Show your child how to use the Monkey bars, take a walk together around the playground track. Be energetic with your kids when it’s playtime.

2) Join your kids in the backyard.
Have soccer players? They LOVE it when you participate. Have a catch of baseball, throw a frisbee, play some tag! With little kids, pretend that you’re animals and leapfrog together until you’re out of breath.

3) Bike.
That’s right — pump up those tired tires, oil those bike chains, strap on the helmets and get your pedals moving. Kids LOVE it when you go with them! Consider investing in a bike rack so you can take your bikes to local park bike trails.

4) Hike.
Go somewhere different each week on a hike with the kids. Nashville has beautiful parks just right for this — get going!

5) Organize a softball game.
Many local parks, schools and churches have base ball fields. Call friends and family together to play a game of softball. Who knows? It might become a monthly event!

6) Walk the dog … fast!
Pick up the pace a bit the next time you go around the block with Fido — no slow meandering here — get your walk on!
