Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. Ages 4 and older. A witch has to make room for passengers when the wind throws a kink into her plans.

The Hallo-Wiener by Dav Pilkey. Ages 4 and older. Hilarious story about a good-hearted but bullied “Weenie” dog and how he wins over friends.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams. Ages 4 and older. The classic children’s folktale. A little old lady decides what to do with the strange articles of clothing that are making the way through the woods on their own.

The House with a Clock in Its Walls by John Bellairs. Ages 8 and older. How to stop the ticking in the wall before the end of the world arrives. A scary story set in a weird, old house.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman. Ages 8 and older. Kids know the movie, now read the book. Coraline lives in a giant house with preoccupied parents … but there are others there, too …
