kids on camera: learning to work in film

Kids ages 8 - 16 can explore different facets of the film business Feb. 12 - 14 during the annual Kids on Camera workshop presented by the Nashville Film Festival and Women in Film and Television.
The workshop offers segments like audition techniques with a local casting director, performing scenes on camera (including a commercial and monologue), trying different looks courtesy of hair and make-up experts, learning terminology of the film industry, receiving a headshot snapped by a celebrity photographer and more.

New this year, participants have the opportunity to walk the red carpet at the Nashville Film Festival prior to a special screening of their work, enjoy photo opportunities and attend a reception following the screenings. Kids will also learn among top cinematographers, gaffers, sound mixers, script supervisors and production assistants.
The workshop takes place at the Nashville Public Television studios, 161 Rains Ave., Nashville. Hours are Fri 6 - 8:30 p.m., Sat 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sun 12 - 5:30 p.m. Cost is $225, and advance registration is required. young writers can express themselves in national contest

pbscontest_sm.pngKeeping with the tradition of the “Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest,” the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest encourages children in grades K - 3 to create their own original stories and illustrations for local and national accolades. Stories must be written by one author and can be fact or fiction, prose or poetry. Children in kindergarten and first grade must write between 50 - 200 words. Second and third graders must write between 100 - 350 words. Children who cannot write may dictate their stories to their parents to be printed or typed. At least five original, clear and colorful illustrations must accompany the stories.

The art can include drawings, photographs, collages and 3D. Local winners will be chosen from each grade, and each first place winner will be entered into the national contest. An award ceremony and celebration for the local winners will take place at Nashville Children’s Theatre (date to be determined). Entry deadline is Friday, March 5. For entry forms, complete rules and more information, visit www.wnpt.net/kids.
