Williamson County's Act Too Players theater school for kids launches a new theater company, AT Pro.
Sondra Morton’s passion for musical theater began when she was 7 years old as a member of the Peter Pan Players in Shreveport, La., where her mom was involved in children’s theater.
“I couldn’t carry a tune,” Morton laughs, “but I loved it!” The Mortons moved to Nashville when Sondra was 14 and she quickly got involved with Circle Players, Pull-Tight Youth Guild and Chaffin’s Barn. After high school, Morton got her musical theater degree at New School University (now The New School), located in Greenwich Village, New York. She also began teaching piano to kids.
“I loved what kids could learn and what I learned from them by teaching,” Morton says. After returning to Tennessee, Morton started the Act Too Players in 2002, a children’s theater school for ages 3 – 18 that produces several productions each year.
“When Act Too started, we had 20 students,” Morton says. “Last year, we had more than 600!”
Indeed, this month, Act Too will launch four fully staged kids’ productions (Disney’s Peter Pan Jr., Disney’s Cinderella Kids, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Into the Woods) all while preparing to launch a new theater company called AT Pro.
“AT Pro is a professional theater company that’s an extension of Act Too Players,” Morton says. Auditions for AT Pro shows are exclusive to current and former students of Act Too Players. Adult actors will be exclusively cast from Act Too teaching artists past and present. Morton serves as AT Pro’s artistic director, partnering with Managing Director Jayme Smith.
“AT Pro’s purpose is to utilize the talents of instructors, alumni and current students to provide Williamson County and it’s surrounding areas with family-friendly professional theater,” says Morton.
AT Pro will produce one or two shows a year; up first is Disney’s Mary Poppins Aug. 18 – 23 at The Franklin Theatre, with Act Too teaching artist Megan Murphy Chambers as the quintessential nanny.
Other lead roles are already cast for Poppins as well, however some ensemble slots are still available and will be cast from Act Too Players participants. Those auditions take place Saturday, May 23.
