About The Center for Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University
The Center for Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University offers a variety of academic summer programs for gifted and talented students completing grades 1 – 10. The camps offer an opportunity for gifted students to form friendships with their intellectual peers while delving into subjects of interest. Classes are taught by educators who have experience working with gifted students. During residential programs, students stay in air-conditioned residence halls under the supervision of camp counselors who plan activities in the evenings and on weekends. All programs are held on WKU’s campus in Bowling Green, Kentucky, one hour north of Nashville on Interstate 65.
Summer Camp for Academically Talented Middle School Students (SCATS)
June 11 – 23, 2017
This two-week camp provides a wide range of classes for academically talented students in grades six through eight this school year. Students take four courses from a wide array of choices, and campers can be residential or nonresidential. Summer Program for Verbally and Mathematically Precocious Youth (VAMPY)
June 25 – July 15, 2017
Students currently in grades seven through ten qualify for VAMPY by taking the ACT or SAT and scoring at or above the average for college-bound seniors. In this three-week residential program, students spend six hours a day in a challenging academic environment. Camp Explore & Innovate
Camp Explore: June 5 – 9, 2017
Camp Innovate: July 10 – 14, 2017
Camp Explore (grades 1 – 3) and Camp Innovate (grades 3 – 5) are day camps for children with advanced ability and high interest.. The experience features hands-on and minds-on instruction designed to engage children in learning at advanced levels.
